2015 CA Flood Preparedness Week

Although it may seem odd to think about flooding during such a severe drought, we must keep in mind that the City of West Sacramento is surrounded by waterways and a system of 52 miles of levee.

CA Flood Preparedness Week focuses on the steps that West Sacramento is taking to reduce the risk of flooding and to promote the importance of the three golden rules. Plan, Pack, Protect.

On Monday, October 19, West Sac Flood Protect, in partnership with the Washington Unified School District, kicked off CA Flood Preparedness week with a media event at Southport Elementary School. Mayor Christopher Cabaldon, Darren Suen from the Department of Water Resources and Rachael Orellana with the US Army Corps of Engineers addressed students, parents, faculty, project partners and the media to explain the importance of flood preparedness in West Sacramento.

Plan-Create an emergency preparedness plan binder with important information like phone numbers, copies of your flood insurance policy and medical information.

Pack-Pack an emergency kit with clothes, blankets, water, non-perishable food, a flashlight and more.

Protect-Purchase flood insurance for your home and have sand bags on hand in case of emergency. Remember most flood insurance policies have a 30-day waiting period before they take effect.
